On the planet Alzarius evolution worked in an unusually accelerated way. Every fifty years its orbit took it away from its sun leading to a cooling known as ‘mistfall’. At this point, eggs began to appear in riverfruit, heralding the arrival of animal life in the form of spiders. These riverfruit spiders in turn evolved into Marshmen. In their original form the Marshmen were humanoid amphibians with bumpy frog-like skin, but when a Starliner crashed on Alzarius, leaving its human crew dead, some of the Marshmen moved into the spaceship and adapted to suit this new environment. Soon they were indistinguishable from the spaceship’s original crew and forgot they had ever been Marshmen, as this was a secret known only to their ruling elite, the Deciders.
